Is classic animation still enough to take the big screen?

I took place when when 2d animation film was considered as the best. Then I was still searching for the top notch films. Fantastic films like Pinocchio were fun to make & at the time inspired a generation, bringing them to new heights. Classic films like Beauty & the Beast & The Lion king were both emotionally groundbreaking, being some of the best work I'd had ever participated in. Now that Pixar has brought in & broadened the horizon with 3d animation films like Toy Story 3, I still wonder if a classic 2d animation film can still take the ranks.
