It seems unfair:

"Likely there will be a group of judges. Some minimum amount of popularity (20 downloads/5 reviews) may be a way to cut out inactive members -- people posting a script and then doing nothing else. Tough to grow a website/contest that way."

For example, if one submits the screen play finished it will be eliminated because it didnt have reviews.
so, under this rules a good quality script sent finished (all the work done before!) is eliminated from the contest because other script (for example a bad quality script) was sent in five or more reviews.

In addition, the same script made by the same author in 5 parts is considered and the same script fully sent in one part is supressed from the contest.

the difference, also goes to the rights form original works and derivate works...
so, they are avoiding full scritps, regarding the quality, and getting all rights in derivate works.

why one good script wrorths less than one bad script with "5 or more reviews?"

that seems discrimination,
its unfair!!!

There is no perfect system.

Nobody knows for sure WHAT the rules for judging will be.

ah, thanks.

I hope they dont discriminate scripts in basis of reviews for the selection.

I spend a full complete week finishing the script to upload one with good quality, reviewed it several times in the computer,
and would be unfair if they discriminate scripts only because they scripts were not review a lot of times in their system.

According to Amazon Studios contest rules: Please note that if a Contest provides that audience metrics or feedback may be used as part of the Contest review or judging process, the earlier your Eligible Entry is submitted, the more time it will have to gather community attention and feedback.

I would respectfully disagree and argue that popularity / community reaction needs to play some role in the contest and someone who drops a script off the night of January 31st shouldn't get the same consideration as someone who has been building their project up for weeks. This whole endeavor is about crowd-sourcing and community participation in the development process. Why should someone who hasn't contributed / participated in the community get the same consideration as someone who has?

If you're looking for someone to read and rate your screenplay with zero effort on your part, there are literally hundreds of screenwriting competitions that you pay a fee and enter - they claim to be impartial and fair - not sure how you impartially and fairly judge art, but okay. I think Amazon is something different. This is a development environment for projects and you can't do that without getting out into the community and garnering their support. I really feel that if you take that out of the equation, Amazon loses a lot of it's uniqueness value for me.

I would add to Richard's comment that you can be the most popular person on the boards, but if your script isn't good because it lacks commercial appeal, is poorly written or is otherwise not salable, you won't win an award or get optioned and your work will be pushed off the top of the pile, making room for others. So, it's not just popularity. Talent will count for something--alot. At the end of the day, talent will win. If the most talented person also happens to be the most popular...she/he just rocks. :)

Eligible contest entries will be narrowed down based, in part, on audience metrics, but winners of Amazon Studios contests will be determined by a panel of industry experts and representatives of Amazon Studios.
