I'm wondering if part of Amazon's desire to reposition the ITMFFID story has to do with budget considerations?
At the core of the story for me, aside from emotional arc, is the tech vibe of the characters. Of course "tech" can be scaled back to fit budget but if Amazon's intent is to do a quirky low budget road rom-com (As I write this I'm thinking of "Wristcutters: A Love Story") that'll effect the story possibilities completely. In that case, the tech would basically be limited to showing the characters with a phone in hand.
I think that could be a perfectly okay way to go but it is significantly different than what draws me to the story. I see huge potential for techie characters that deal with the themes mentioned in the studio notes. (I obviously don't want to be too specific here...) Additionally, I think to find the necessary bigger audience it's important to retain a bit of action as well, but maintaining a lighter tone than the original. No sex slavery in the offing.
Thinking about it this post is part question of what the studios intention is AND ALSO part persuasive argument commit to more than a ""Juno" on the road" treatment. "Juno" was a great film but this could be a lot more fun.
Okay, that's my spiel: I hope Amazon leaves the door open for something REALLY FUN because it can be and I think the box office payoff will reflect it.
Additionally, in case it isn't obvious already, I'd like to be a contributor to a 200million dollar grossing movie.
