Great article from the NYTimes, that also talks about the screenwriters:

Interesting to note that, just as in Alien and Aliens, the lead is a woman -- and so are several of the main supporting characters. The "love interest" is a man. :)
Also, the marketing for this is flat-out brilliant -- an art form in itself. If there's an award for movie marketing, this and Hunger Games should win it.
(And John Carter should get the Razzie.)
Again, this is on my short list of "must see" movies this year.
I just discovered my husband has never seen Alien or Aliens! Now I know what we'll be watching for family movie night the next two weeks. Be interesting to see how they hold up.
100% Agree - can't friggin' wait!!!
The original Aliens is still 'outstanding'
Saw the trailer. So.. is it the prequel to Alien? I'm a big fan of the series.
'Fassbender' was great as the edgey Magneto in X-men -- so I'd hope he'd be doing the same thing... giving it the same 'bitter attitude'.
Give him a reason to blow the sh@# out of something and I'll pay to go see it.
Even if he was wrong to do so... make me feel guilty for liking him blow shit up. haha :-)
@ Lauri. I know someone who hasn't seen E.T. and he has a degree in Media Studies. That to me is like WWWHAAAAT!
Grab your kids and your popcorn EVERYONE should go see this!
It takes place in the same universe/future as Alien, 30 years earlier, and on the same planet.
Cool that Aliens is going to be a family movie night flick. We have family movie night every Saturday, and my son, who is now a teenager, asked if we could watch something that wasn't a "kiddie flick." I told him it's high time I introduce him to a couple of films called Alien and Aliens. He's also wanting to see Terminator 2, so we're going to have a "ladies who kick butt" trilogy.
Chris - good for you!
This week our family movie night will be going out to see Coriolanus -- kicking butt in iambic pentameter.
:)
Lauri, they stand up. Just stop after #2.

@ Chris
Term'2 is worth it just for the Guns 'n' Roses score.
Hello everyone! READ: I am the final source or ALIEN KNOWLEDGE! LOL. Yes, I'm a huge fan -- but putting that way is putting it lightly. I have read the scripts (DAMN RIGHT) read a few of the books -- NOTE - THE BOOK based on the 1st movie is actually pretty damn good. (a book based on a movie is usually not good.) So, IF ANYBODY has any QUESTIONS - feel free to ASK ME!
What Lauri said is correct about the Prometheus timeline -- also , remember the "space jockey" from Alien?? That is in Prometheus! Finally, we may learn more about that entity. The book I mentioned actually has more on that.
And yea- another female heroine! Awesome! although I will always like Ripley the best... Respect.
Maybe Sig Weaver will have a cameo?? Somehow... (I know -- it's a prequel) but she could have a suit on -- or thick makeup and play Ripley's grandma or something... Sorry. did i say i was a big fan??? Lol.
But - yea, if anybody has ANY questions at all on the screenplay, genesis, or background on any of the movies... feel free to ask me here! CAN'T WAIT! trailer looks epic. got that ALIEN sound / music too! LOVE IT!
There have been so many trailers and leaks it's like I've seen the movie already, except the last scene, which I assume will feature a xenomorph. Still looking forward to it almost as much as Dark Knight Rises, though.
Finally watched Alien with the family. Interesting how movies even that recent seem "slow" compared to today's hyperkinetics. Not as scary as I remembered; of course, I knew what was coming. Still got a few shrieks out of my kids. ;) Great performance by Sigourney Weaver, reminding me (AGAIN) of how rare roles like that for women are.
Incredibly lame looking titles by today's standards, but that's a minor quibble.
On to Prometheus!
Really, Lauri? I rather like the title sequence in Alien with the letters appearing bit by bit. In fact they adopted the same look for the Prometheus letters in some of the trailers...
I'll always remember walking up to the theater reading the bill board...ALIENS...Will Scare the Peanuts Out of Your M & M's
@ Luke - the letters of the main title were OK, but then the rest of it looks like fuzzy helvetica.
I'm assuming Lauri you've seen the original 1979 trailer for "Alien". It's odd that Scott wants to insist that "Prometheus" is not a prequel (despite having the Space Jockey in it) but having the same shrieking music and title design as the original "Alien" trailer puts it over the top. "Prometheus" advertising is going for nostalgia for the over 40 set. My question is are their 10 year olds watching the "Prometheus" ads who will look back fondly at them in 30 years? That "Alien" trailer (and shrieking sound) messed me up and caused many a sleepless night for me. The second that damn egg came on the t.v. I plugged my ears and ditched the room.
The fictional company in Prometheus is now "recruiting" people using Linked In.
More genius social marketing here...

P.S. Yes, Dosch - I remember that scary trailer..... It probably traumatized a whole generation... ;)
Opening strongly overseas, but the reviews are just OK; 79% on the tomatometer:
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/prometheus_2012/
97% of people want to see it regardless, and I'm one of them. :)
ummhph.
I want to see it just as badly anyways.
And frankly. I actually 100% expected it not to be 'quite as good'.
And I can say why. the first alien was so damn good because Ridley exercised so much restraint.
The screenplay was poetically spare.
It was set in REAL 3 dimensional sets that people walked around in - in limited space.
The Alien was 'real' - a disguised actor -ferociously terrifying - but still an actor.
The pacing/tension are insane. Very few high action moments happen, and when they do, they stand out profoundly in contrast to the 'serene', technological, rational restraint. The monstrous against the rational.
It is almost impossible/inevitable that Ridley would turn to modern methods...and both gain and lose something thereby.
CGI always drops terror of 'monsters' or threats down a huge knotch. Always. We, at least so far, dont perceive them as real. Its always a fancy trick.
Whereas , I felt like the original alien was 'real. Terrifying. 3 dimensional.
I'm really interested to read the script and see how it differs from the writing expectations of the 79 film.
But anyways..still just as excited- Ridley's worst would still make most modern films pale. And I'm not jaded. Yet.

I'm really interested to read the script and see how it differs from the writing expectations of the 79 film. Obviously the story's modern complexities affect why its not as well received. I'm guessing it lacks the purity of such a straightforward plot in the original.
But anyways..still just as excited- Ridley's worst would still make most modern films pale. And I'm not jaded. Yet.
DAMN.
This delay double post nonsense is frustrating.
Sorry.
and i meant
that Ridely 'wouldn't' turn to modern methods.
Hey wait...
Is it alright if I talk about this stuff? I mean, it doesn't fit in the new trend of taxonomic ordering of all films/filmmakers/tv shows/theme songs/etc.

I liked Prometheus... and watched it at 10.45pm.
It's a 15 in the UK whereas the US is bit more restricted.
I loved the fact it was branching off into NEW ground and look forward to the DVD which hopefully has lots of extras with a running commentary! (Go Ridley)
PS. Nice 'Prophets of Science Fiction' Series... which just aired the first episode covering George Lucas.
