Synopsis

A Welsh family is torn apart by fears of their country which seems to have more mosques than McDonald's and terrorists lurking in every corner shop. The only person trying to hold it all together is the mother, Karen. She has to deal with her layabout husband, who makes a joke about everything; her daughter, who no longer speaks to dad because he hates that she’s fallen in love with an Indian and her son, who’s secretly a racist thug. This funny and heartbreaking film deals with the paranoia of racism, the politics of hate and how it affects this family.

Powerful film, believable characters and Shakespearian in its emotional depth.
A story of a self-sacrificing mother whose epithany just stops short of destroying her family. I'd love to see the full-movie version as then we'd have the opportunity of empathising with the Indian family even more. Although the daughter's account of them is very effective. Great performances from all the cast. Alf Garnet couch potato, maleable young male, truth loving daughter and keeping them all together the loving Mum. Brilliant photography and wonderful locations. The final scene of the Hindu funeral among the rockpools is memorable.

This film seemed to take a while to develop. Characters seemed two dimensional for quite a while, but the story dropped deep into realism; and the character development fleshed out quickly and beautifully once the storyline presented itself, about half way through. The acting was superb. The strong accents made some of the words difficult to follow, but on balance that posed no problem. I liked the color palette, and also the camera work. I highly recommend this film.
