Synopsis: During the Civil War, Confederate Lieutenant Frank Woodward witnesses Captain Rufus Ingram, a red-headed “Bushwhacker,” kill a young Union soldier in cold blood. After the war, Frank travels to New Hampshire to deliver the dead boy’s Bible to his orphaned sister Charlotte (“Charlie”), then returns to his family’s horse-breeding plantation in Georgia.

One day, while reading a dime novel, Charlie learns about “The Red Fox,” a red-headed Bushwhacker-turned-bandit who preys on stagecoaches in California. Believing this may be her brother’s murderer, she leaves town, disguises herself as a man, and gets work as a stable hand and stagecoach driver-in-training.

Frank, on a horse-selling trip through New England, recognizes Charlie. After their romantic encounter, Charlie, determined to find her brother’s killer, decides to head West. Frank, haunted by Charlie, also goes West, looking for her...
