Vincent Zandri's cunning noir detective Dick Moonlight returns with his toughest case yet—an open-and-shut murder investigation isn’t shut after all—and turns up something more sinister than anything he’s ever come up against.
Project collaboration: Closed
Synopsis: Joan Parker is the last woman that private eye Dick Moonlight would ever expect to see in his Albany, N.Y., office. From the right side of the tracks, she bears her upper class upbringing as effortlessly as a string of pearls. She also bears a scar running down her head and face—a brutal reminder of the ax attack that took the life of her husband. Her twenty-one-year-old son, Christopher, now sits in jail charged with the crime.

According to the official report, and based on Joan’s answers to police when they arrived at the house and found her barely alive, Christopher was named as the ax wielding attacker. But sitting in Moonlight’s office, she reveals that she has no recollection of the event, yet is certain of one thing: Christopher didn’t do it.

Moonlight knows a thing or two about brushes with death. And he also knows the tragedy of the police jumping to the wrong conclusions—a past case of a falsely accused client still haunts him—so he agrees to take the job and get to the truth of what happened that day. At first the trail of clues, from the crime scene to Joan’s original accusation, keeps the finger pointed at Christopher. But soon Moonlight turns up something he never unexpected, something more sinister than anything he’s ever come up against.

Given the vast amount of plot development in Murder By Moonlight, we found a rich coffer of usable scenes. The characters are very well thought out, so we tried to stay true to the novel. The most daunting task with a trailer is how to generate anticipation while also creating a polished, engaging work that stands alone. Making your audience happy for having seen it and making them want more.

The idea here was to make a teaser for a book so that readers can get a glimpse of story that makes them want to read on further, not necessarily to see a movie version, or click on to the next exciting thing. Classic images, noir aesthetic, and a dialectic between music and words with minimal flash was chosen to stay in line with the author's medium and generate suspenseful interest.

However, if our trailer wins, we can easily add more shadows to his face or go black & white, if requested.

This version uses a Japanese art style (Manga) to convey the story from Dick Moonlight's perspective and it also shows my spin on the story as well. I see Moonlight as a man who is older and a little wiser than he used to be, so he proceeds with caution and thinks to himself more, which allows him to get a better angle on the case. I hope you enjoy my trailer and the book as well.
