JANUARY SEMIFINALIST... Arthur Pym regales a young Edgar Allan Poe with a tale of two boys who stow away on a ship bound for Antarctica. When the ship is mutinied, the boys head into a mystical world filled with unexpected adventure and horror. Poe will never be the same.
Synopsis:It’s 1838 when a reporter named Edgar Allen Poe is sent to cover the story of Arthur Gordon Pym for the Southern Literary Messenger. Pym recounts a tale from his youth of incredible adventure and horror, when he stowed away aboard a ship bound for Antarctica to rescue his father, missing after a sea-faring expedition went awry. But as Pym’s tale unfolds, another story is unveiling -- bizarre murders that have the townspeople of Nantucket fearing for their lives. As the interviews continue, Poe begins to realize there are more secrets Arthur Pym brought back with him from the South Seas, about which he’s been less than forthcoming. Based on the Edgar Allan Poe novel “The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket.” (WGA Registered Material)
The original story by Poe was fashioned into something more complete as Poe never satisfactorily finished the account himself. The decision to have Poe himself enter the story as a young writer interviewing a real Arthur Gordon Pym that told a true story revolutionized the script.
