Synopsis:A writer named M.J. gets dropped by her agent and an actor named Hal goes to his movie premier only to discover his part once again has been left on the cutting room floor. After seven frustrating years in Los Angeles and both nearing 30, M.J. and Hal end their relationship.
The former couple also decide to give up their dreams and move back to Boston. But since M.J. and Hal are completely broke they are reluctantly forced to drive back home together in their decaying convertible. After breaking down a few hours outside of L.A. they meet Cornelius, an energetic, naïve, barely five foot young man forced by his father to be a tow truck driver after eating the last chocolate chip muffin. Cornelius wants to flee his pathetic life and ends up tagging along with M.J. and Hal on their adventure across America. While on the road the three of them encounter obstacle after obstacle with each highway they exit. In Roswell they battle alien abductees fanatics, in Texas it’s a horseback riding bandits, in New Orleans it’s an excess of booze and their own bad judgment. Before they reach their final destination the three choose to part ways- Hal and M.J. in separate busses to Boston and Cornelius to Key West with a girl he met on Bourbon Street.
Back in Boston M.J. goes to law school and Hal takes a job at his Dad’s hardware store. Both are miserable and feel remorse about giving up their dreams.. One day M.J. and Hal get letters from Cornelius with tickets to see the Red Sox- each think they will go to the game with their little friend. Unbeknownst to them they wind up sitting together in the bleachers, and the former couple soon realize they’re still in love with each other. After leaving Fenway M.J. and Hal run into Cornelius, who is happy his scheme of getting them back together has worked. But the little guy has a bigger plan. He has just learned that his Dad illegally kept his inheritance from him and he’s soon to receive a lot of money.
To thank M.J. and Hal for showing him America and for being so kind to him, Cornelius promises to fund the money to make one of M.J.’s scripts into a film. They all decide to drive back to Los Angeles together and give Hollywood another try.
