Synopsis: THE PITCH: "A spaghetti western that rifts on old west archetypes."

RAYFIELD SCOTT returns to Chicago after fighting in the Civil War. He and LILLIAN marry, say goodbye to family (including niece JULIA, a singer), and join a caravan heading west. Ray has a teaching position at a San Diego school. Ray and Lillian depart from the caravan in Kansas and ride through New Mexico. A gang led by HANK GARRISON ambushes them. Ray’s beaten unconscious, Lillian’s raped and murdered. The local sheriff is ineffectual. Ray builds a cabin in a secluded spot outside Santa Rosa, buries Lillian, and trains to become a master gunman. Ray makes a living as a bounty hunter while continually searching for the gang. Ray is hired by BETH JENNINGS to find her younger brother, LYLE. Ray agrees to let Beth -- out of money after paying him -- stay at his cabin.

Ray sets out to find Lyle. In Santa Fe, Ray learns that Lyle is now a part of the Garrison Gang. Santa Fe’s sheriff, HARRIS, is corrupt and in league with Garrison. Ray follows the gang outside town and foils their ambush of a three-wagon train. Garrison is shot but escapes; Lyle is captured. Lyle tries to convince Ray he’s not a bad guy -- he just got caught up in the gang. Ray tells him he’ll bring him to Santa Rosa to see Beth, but if there’s a bounty on him, Ray will turn him in and collect. Garrison returns to Santa Fe. A troupe of traveling entertainers arrives in Santa Fe; Ray’s niece Julia is with the troupe. Two members of the gang, searching for Lyle, help him escape from Ray. Ray, badly hurt, manages to stumble back to his cabin. Beth helps him recover. Ray -- who has become an automaton in his quest to avenge Lillian -- recaptures his humanity. Ray tells Beth he will capture Lyle again but this time will turn him over to the law. Ray and Beth grow close ... Ray asks Beth to live with him. She tells him she has responsibilities -- and a fiancé (foisted on her by her parents) -- back home. Sheriff Harris convinces Garrison to rob the entertainers after they leave town. Ray returns to Santa Fe.

Ray spots the gang in a restaurant. Before he can ambush them, Harris arrests him. Ray is beaten and jailed. Garrison visits the sheriff’s office. Harris says they will hang Ray... but not until the entertainers leave. Harris introduces Garrison to three criminals in the cell adjacent to Ray’s. Ray, drifting in and out of consciousness, overhears them talk of robbing the entertainers. The entertainers board a train and leave town. Ray manages to escape by setting fire to the jail. He takes a deputy’s horse and rides after the train. The gang ambushes the train. Ray arrives mid-robbery. A shootout ensues. Lyle takes off. Ray and Garrison have a showdown -- Ray kills Garrison. Ray shoots Lyle. Lyle dies. Ray and Beth say goodbye. Beth returns home with Lyle’s body. She has dinner with her parents and fiancé -- a lifetime of unfulfillment awaits her. Ray dines alone. Beth takes a stagecoach to Santa Rosa. When it arrives, Ray is there to greet her.
