Synopsis: CHRIS MCKAY is a slim, black seventh grader. He is awkward around girls, especially his long-time crush, ALYSSA. His older brother gets most of the attention at home, and Chris is left to work through his adolescent troubles on his own. He has a tight-knit group of friends that help him through the hard times, but they are not able to stop CHARLIE, a Brad-Pitt-wanna-be, from always picking fights with Chris.

In high school, Chris becomes an attractive athlete and is well-liked amongst his peers. He and his friends are not picture perfect teens, however, and constantly challenge the racially charged world around them. When Chris gets fed up, he uses the ruse of a bet to infiltrate the “Inner Circle,” a group of popular, rich kids who run the school, and to finally make a move on Alyssa.

When Chris succeeds at wooing Alyssa and takes the relationship public, her ex-boyfriend Charlie and his friends align themselves with Chris’s disgruntled friend, THEO, to destroy the relationship and return the school to order.

In his focus to maintain status in the “Circle,” Chris alienates his friend TATE, a former member of the “Circle” whose school- and home-life has been declining steadily for years. Tate is pushed to the edge and for those who survive the aftermath, lives are changed forever.
