Eggy

The relatively predictable world of an all-boys Catholic high school is turned upside down thanks to a few bad breaks and the surprise emergence of its newest and oddest student - the 12-year-old, egg-headed genius known (un)affectionately as Eggy.
Synopsis: Eric Schultz is just your average high school student…well, except for the fact that he’s a 12- year-old genius with a large, egg-shaped head who rarely opens his mouth – otherwise, though, totally normal. We meet Eric (aka “Eggy”) at St. Peter’s Prep, a sports-crazed, all-boys Catholic high school in which he has been enrolled following the death of his mother, who had homeschooled him his entire life. The environment at the school – not surprisingly, a cruel and confusing one for someone in Eric's situation – is dominated by the championship soccer team, namely, its resident superstar, Billy Collins, and his aging/balding/former superstar coach and gym teacher, Mark Lowsack.

While these two "heroes" add to their legends on the fields of play, Eric spends the majority of his time trying (and failing) to understand both the loss of his mother and the brutality of his classmates. Fortunately, he is offered momentary periods of salvation in the classroom of Sister Ellen, a science and-music-loving nun whose sound advice and gentle acoustic harmonies provide a peaceful setting in which Eric and a small group of similarly-ridiculed nerdlings can work on their project for the upcoming science fair: a self-styled rocket which they hope to send to the heavens and beyond.

On the opposite side of the coin, life outside of St. Peter's Prep is not all trophies and victories for Billy and Lowsack. In fact, things take on quite a different flavor once they return to their respective homes, with Billy laboring under the critical post-game tutelage of his wild-haired, fast-driving father, Ken, and Lowsack turning to the bottle to help him combat the growing vigilance (and waistline) of his wife, Rhonda, a one-time beauty queen and current cheerleading coach whose caloric intake Lowsack monitors as closely as the hairs of his impeccable mustache.

As the work on their rocket intensifies, so too does Eric's friendship with his science-fair partners. Sadly, any good feelings derived from these developments are washed away when a needlessly ill-willed joke engineered by Billy's devilish friend and teammate, John, (and unwittingly aided by Billy himself) drives Eric to tears.

Tension over the incident – not to mention John's increasingly vocal resentment over Billy's new relationship with Mary Manning, a curly-haired girl whom the boys had previously dubbed "Pube Head" – leads to a rift between the friends that eventually escalates into a full-fledged fight.

That same afternoon, Eric is sent further into the abyss when the science-fair rocket is destroyed during a test flight, which results in an emotional breakdown that threatens to obliterate everything he holds dear. Thankfully, however, just when it is needed most, inspiration appears and compels Eric to persevere. Working through the night, he masterfully repairs the rocket, a feat that enables him and his friends to achieve great success at the next day's science fair.

Things don't go quite so well for Lowsack and his star player, as Billy is brutally injured during a semi-final match, causing St. Peter’s to lose to its archrival and launching the shocked Lowsack, his relationship with Rhonda already in tatters, into a tragic-comic downward spiral. Literally adding insult to injury, John reveals something to Mary after the game that causes her to sever all ties with Billy.

And so, while Eric and his nerdmates delight in the spoils of victory, Billy and Lowsack lament their existences, for the first time being forced to truly come to terms with their limitations. The world, for all intents and purposes, has been flipped upside down.

What will come next, nobody knows. But one thing is for sure: it’s shaping up to be quite an interesting week at St. Peter’s Prep, a school that’s about to experience the craziest Friday in its history…and where the order of the past might never be restored.

    Creative Notes:
This script was optioned by a New York-based production company who, unfortunately, lost their access to funding during the development process. I recently reacquired the rights and am now looking for a new home for the project. I am extremely excited about the opportunity to potentially work with Amazon to translate what I feel is a gorgeous story into an equally beautiful movie.
