A subversive take on heist movies, Danny McCrea pulls off the ultimate bank job on a quiet Omaha morning, leaving dozens dead and many more wounded. While hitting all the standard beats of an action crime movie, the audience is asked just what exactly they're rooting for.
Synopsis:Forty Dead explores the nature of crime films, heist movies in particular. Danny McCrea, fresh out of a several year stint in prison, has come back a changed man. His fiancee Delilah and best friend Vincent barely recognize him through a cold armor he's learned to keep up to survive. On top of that, he has only one thing on his mind: robbing the biggest bank in the Midwest.
With Vincent's help, Danny puts together a crack team of thieves and get to work stealing forty million dollars from Omaha First Bank. Danny's plan is cold and ruthless. He doesn't believe in cute and quirky schemes, he believes in brute force and violence. He won't let anything, or anyone, get in his way.
After a quick hit on a black market arms dealer in order to acquire some heavy weaponry, Danny and his crew hit Omaha First hard. At first, everything goes according to plan. Danny didn't count on the chance coincidence of Detectives Clerval and Miller being at the bank that morning and soon things get even bloodier than he expected.
By the end, thirty-nine are dead, many more wounded. Danny is in a shootout in the middle of the New Mexico badlands. Only one thing is certain: it's either him or them.
