Logline: A young mechanic steals a Porsche, not knowing that the red-hot car conceals a nuclear device that could spell doom for more than a million people.
Jimmy, a young mechanic and former Golden Gloves champ is fresh from a stint in a correctional facility.
Helping Jimmy stay straight are his boss, Pops, an old man who holds hope for Jimmy's future, and Officer Rollins, Jimmy's uncle, who pledged to keep the young man out of trouble after Jimmy's parents were slain. But Jimmy remains at arms length emotionally, choosing instead to invest his feelings in the cars he repairs, including Guinevere, a 1969 GTO, the car his father left him.
The one person able to pierce Jimmy's emotional armor is Stephanie, the beautiful cashier at the garage where he works. Stephanie does her best to resist Jimmy's charm. She isn't interested in a poor mechanic with no future. She wants out of Milwaukee and she's looking for a man who can foot the bill.
Jimmy and Stephanie have their lives change forever when Mina, a rose-red Porsche GT2, arrives at the garage. Mina blows a gasket and Jimmy is enlisted to repair her. Once the repairs are complete, however, the thick-necked Germans who brought Mina in hold Jimmy, Stephanie and Rollins at gun point. Rollins ends up shot, forcing Jimmy hand Stephanie to escape in the only vehicle at hand – Mina, the Porsche.
It is unknown to Jimmy and Stephanie why the Germans wanted them dead. All they know is that they need help, fast. And fast is what they get, when the Germans pursue them through the streets of Milwaukee in a nerve-wracking, high-action chase.
Jimmy calls the cops, but this only ends with Milwaukee policemen dead at the hands of the vicious Germans. Jimmy decides the best course of action is to get off the road and hide out in his one-room dump until help can arrive.
It is here that Jimmy and Stephanie find a moment to breath. The tense action brings them close but gunshots outside bring reality back down on them like a ton of bricks. The Germans are here, somehow able to find Jimmy no matter where he runs. But this time, the police arrive in force, with SWAT and helicopters as back up.
Detective Harper, a hard-boiled, old-school gumshoe of a policeman has been trying to put the pieces of what happened together, but the more he questions Jimmy, the more confusing the situation becomes, especially when a fax arrives from Homeland Security regarding the car, Mina. Harper wants answers, his fellow officers have died. What comes next is explosive, literally.
An assault chopper attacks the police precinct and proceeds to blow a hole in the roof with air-to-surface rockets. A pair of mysterious agents in black drop into the police station to bust out their fellow Germans in a wild and lethal gun battle. In the smoke and gun fire, Jimmy escapes with Stephanie - but even with all Hell breaking loose, the Germans continue to pursue him.
In the impound lot, Jimmy is able to elude the grasp of the Germans but Stephanie is captured. For Jimmy, all hope is lost. His uncle has been shot, his future is in shambles and the girl he loves has been abducted by crazed Nazi terrorists. It's at this point that federal agents take him into custody as a risk to national security!
Jimmy may be fated for 20-years-to-life, but he won't to let Stephanie remain in the hands of his nemesis. He makes a play, calling on boxing skills to escape in the chaos around the assaulted police station. He finds his way to Guinevere, his GTO, with plans to rescue Stephanie before he goes back to prison for a long, long time.
Detective Harper tracks Jimmy down and appeals to him not to do this, but Jimmy is not to be stopped. He flees in his GTO, using jury-rigged GPS equipment to get a lock on Mina.
Jimmy stops to see his uncle in the hospital. Jimmy now understands why his uncle took a bullet for him. Love. With this kind of love in Jimmy's corner, there is nothing that can stop him. Jimmy heads out to save Stephanie and to redeem himself for the cold shoulder he so often turned to the ones who cared most about him.
In an action-pack resolution, Jimmy ends up at a mansion on the shores of Lake Michigan - the lair of Ulrich Schenker, the devious mind behind all that's happened. Schenker and his henchmen battle Special Forces, Detective Harper and Homeland Security, along with Jimmy and Stephanie, in a final showdown for possession of the Porsche. Jimmy fights alongside Stephanie to put down the Germans who harassed them. Detective Harper finds revenge for his fellow policemen. And, the real threat is revealed. Mina is a dirty bomb in disguise, on her way to Chicago for a detonation that would kill millions. Jimmy employs innovative mechanical sense to disarm the bomb seconds before detonation.
In the end, Jimmy discovers that having relationships with actual people might be risky, but it's a risk worth taking. With this lesson learned, Jimmy takes a bullet meant for Stephanie, completing an emotional journey with an act of selflessness, an act of sacrifice, an act of love. His actions show Stephanie what is truly important: That money won't rescue her from a depressed life in Milwaukee, but love will. As the Porsche marketing slogan says, “There is no substitute”.
Jimmy and Stephanie end up heroes. As for Mina, well, let's just say that she isn't destined for that great parking lot in the sky just yet.
