Synopsis: Marcus never mentions that he is the son of the martyred Northern ambassador, nor that he was born in the Spanish-speaking South yet served in the Northern military throughout the war. He has moved back to his country of birth, opened a restaurant in the small Paisano town of San Luis, and he lives as quietly as he can in an attempt to ignore the past. He has forged friendships with his cook Francisco, the local Paisano police chief Escobedo, and other locals and expatriates in his adopted home.

One day, his hopes of forgetting the past are forever dashed when Escobedo arrests Marcus' estranged sister Maia and her lover, the leader of a rag-tag rebellion against the North. Although Marcus is able to trade on his friendship with Escobedo to have his sister released, this sets off a chain of suspicion and mistrust between them. And as Marcus and his sister rehash old arguments and she shares her fears about an expanding Northern military presence, Marcus learns that his sister and her friends are gathering strength to strike against the Northern military. And even more shocking than this, Marcus finds that they call themselves "La Revolucion de Mayo" in honor of the May revolution that saw the Northern ambassador, their father, killed nine years ago.

Six months later, Maya's suspicions are nearing realization as each day provides more evidence of a military buildup at the small base outside San Luis. But when Maya returns to town to ask for her brother's help in the rebellion, he once again refuses.

Meanwhile, Marcus is not the only person in San Luis struggling with questions of duty; as the North takes an ever-greater interest in local lawbreakers, police chief Escobedo finds his job harder and harder to do. He becomes suspicious that Marcus is a secret agent of the North and although he is wrong about this, an agent has in fact found both Marcus and Maya and when this agent confronts Marcus, the result is deadly.

In the confusion of fast-moving events and personal angst, Escobedo confronts Marcus for a crime he did not commit and when Marcus reveals his secret past, Escobedo reveals his own: he was part of the first Revolucion de Mayo and has cursed the former ambassador all his days.

Pulling himself together, Marcus puts a plan into action and makes his way into the bush to assist the rebels. Although the rebels are suspicious of him at first, Marcus' bond with Maya proves strong enough to win them over, and the brother and sister settle their mutual scores once and for all.

Marcus and the rebels coordinate and execute a three-pronged attack on the small military base. And although they make pains to minimize casualties, innocents die on each side. In the end, the rebels are successful in their small mission and Marcus is alone and bloodied. In the confusion, only Escobedo is smart enough to determine who perpetrated the attack and he takes inspiration from Marcus' actions, setting both of them on the right path: into the rain forest to continue the struggle together.
