The same old tired genre of a story-line being regurgitated yet again. Something has to be recovered, by someone being chased and someone in hot pursuit to stop that someone recovering that something.
Overall Recommendation:
Points of failure.
1. Charlie sounds like he is written by a jingoist American. The French judges emphasize that he is American, and that Americans win the diving prize more often than not. Looking at the Olympic finalists in the last twenty years for the 10 metre platform, an American won one gold medal and one silver. Not consistent with the judges' dialogue. May as well have the French say 'Everyone is All-American' or some such. No need to alienate foreign audiences.
2. When he wins the diving prize, rather than thanking the judges, with due etiquette, he is dismissive, telling them to 'put it on the slate' or so. That sounds very arrogant, unlikeable, small minded and, childish. If the story is one of character redemption that may make sense, but assuming it is not, I give but one star for the character.
3. There is no such thing as a precious metal detector that tells you the mass of precious metals in a metal hulled submarine. You have to extract it and weigh it. Rather than make up some science fiction hocus pocus, consider a credible alternative.
4. How do you get 17 tons of gold aboard a submarine?
