More About Me

I was born in 1921 in East Vandergrift, a little town in western Pennsylvania. During the Depression, I had to quit high school and go to work to help support my widowed mother and younger siblings. I found a job as a cleaning lady at Mel’s Boarding House in Pittsburgh near the Pitt and Carnegie Tech campuses. There is where I met my husband Jim, who died in 1966. We had five wonderful children. A few years ago, after my second heart attack, my daughter Diana talked me into collaborating on a screenplay about Mel’s Boarding House. I’m very proud of my first screenplay and hope to do another one before, well, you know.

Brutal murder, Nazi stolen treasure from Jews during WW II, damsel in distress, evil husband, honorable mystery novelist, dapper and sweet older neighbor, Newport old money, international art world, secret passageways in the mansion, SS officers -- what more could you ask for in a script ripped from the pages of Alfred Hitchcock’s future screenplays to direct? Come on. This is a great script. They don't write like this these days in Hollywood. What a shame.

A gorgeous redhead, Gale Puttick is a woman men dream about. Or maybe she's just an ambitious, dissatisfied wife, married to gruff Howard, the uncouth millionaire. Or maybe all those banked flames of hers are getting too much fresh oxygen from confident, breezy, smooth-talking Tony Romero who drifts into her life of quiet desperation. It doesn't matter. Fate is walking slowly down the highway toward Gale and Tony. Nothing is going to change what passion and murder will bring them, and the twist of ironic justice sets them up for a great ending. This script is loaded with unbridled greed and bottomless lust, and once you start reading this screenplay you won't be able to stop.

A really great film noir!

A slave who bought her freedom, Elizabeth Keckley utilizes her intelligence, astute business savvy, and fashion design skills to create gowns and dresses for well-known politicians' wives in pre-Civil War Washington, D.C. After Abraham Lincoln becomes President, Elizabeth becomes the First Lady's exclusive dressmaker.

Over the following years, Elizabeth Keckley and Mary Todd Lincoln become extremely close. Elizabeth is regularly summoned to the White House to dress the first lady, where she witnesses intimate moments between the President and his wife, receives the confidences of Mrs. Lincoln, and observes the domestic interactions of the first family. Keckley is also present during many of Mrs. Lincoln's discussions with her husband, concerning members of his cabinet or his political affairs.

Keckley and Mrs. Lincoln also bond over the death of their sons: Elizabeth's son George is killed in battle and young Willie Lincoln dies of typhoid fever. As the Civil War draws to a close, Keckley is close enough to the Lincoln family to be invited to join the presidential party during a triumphant tour of conquered Richmond.

Elizabeth Keckley is Mrs. Lincoln's primary confidante during the distressing period after President Lincoln's assassination. She describes Mrs. Lincoln's crushing grief as well as her financial troubles, during which the former First Lady relies on Keckley for solace.

What an amazing story about an extraordinary woman!
