Age rating: 13 and older
A down and out stunt man, his gay, high-strung cousin, and the movie producer on the run from a loan shark hit the jackpot by producing the first martial-arts musical. (Screenplay available upon request)
Synopsis: DINO, mid 40’s, Italian, rugged, martial artist has been a stunt man in Hollywood for a long time. His dream is to become the greatest action hero in Hollywood since the Governor of California. Although he’s very capable, Dino has not been able to gain the respect of the entertainment business and believes that time is running out. His cousin, SHAWN, a 34 year old gay film producer that has channeled the spirits of every cliché` producer that has worked in Hollywood: PRODUCES A MUSICAL. Not just any musical, but a musical featuring martial artist. Dino and his “troop” will kick, punch, dance and sing their way into the audience’s hearts. The plan is to stage the greatest musical since “Oklahoma”, and in effect become rich, famous and appear on MTV’s Cribs.
More importantly, the box office receipt will help pay back a debt Shawn owns to a loan shark named FALCONI, a man trying to soften his image by attending anger management classes. Falconi, a self-proclaimed screenwriter, pressures Shawn to produce his script, “SuperFalconi” a not so subtle rip-off of Superman. After withdrawing their life savings, Dino and Shawn begin their American Idol style search for talent. From a gifted young martial artist to a group of mysterious teen performers, Dino and Shawn are surrounded by raw talent.
With only a short time to rehearse, Dino and Shawn must bring the best out of themselves in order to inspire the troops, keep the show on track and keep Falconi and his goons off their backs. Dino’s fighting skills come in handy when he “persuades” Falconi’s men to stay away, while Shawn and his eccentric hired crew continue to prepare for the big opening. Shawn’s crew includes the cross dresser diva, AURA, the homeless conductor, MAESTRO, the humorless production manager, EDDIE, and the legendary MADAME CASTILLE, the show’s director/choreographer that will test Dino’s patience.
When it’s all said and done and the curtain in finally ready to be raised, Dino and Shawn will have changed for the better and realize that personal gratification is no longer a priority for success. Falconi’s evil side resurfaces as he attempts to ruin the show by killing Dino on stage, but Dino successfully defeats Falconi and save the musical. In the end, Shawn looks back as a proud parent and watches the show become a success, while Dino continues a newfound romance with Sarah.

With it’s dark comedic crime underworld storyline and outlandish accounting of the making of a live martial arts musical, “The Next Big Hit” combines elements of the smash Broadway play “The Producers” with the hit film “Get Shorty”. As an offbeat buddy flick combining a fabulously gay producer and a very straight martial arts stuntman, shares also similarities with “Rush Hour”
