Synopsis: Cycle of Operation is a collection of four unrelated stories all revolving around a single gun that passes through the lives of a variety of different people.

The title itself is a term used by gun enthusiasts to categorize the phases that a firearm goes through in order to work. The cycle it refers to applies not just to the operation of a gun, but also to the cycle which permeates many urban neighborhoods.

Our story begins with two small time criminals, Pookie and Papo, purchasing an illegal gun from a Mystery Man out of the back of his trunk. Not longer after, the pair ditch the gun when they are harassed by the police.

The gun is found by Anthony, a young man with a promising future who wants to break out of his environment and all of the negative stereo-types of Italian-Americans. Not sure what to do with his discovery, Anthony must soon use the gun to stop an attempted robbery at his uncle’s business. In the end, he decides to get rid of the gun and has his low-life brother sell it.

The gun then finds itself in the hands of a Hitman who wants to retire but has one more job to carry out. He seeks the advice of a Priest, where in the sanctity of the confessional booth, he recounts the story of his life and how he became an assassin. Ultimately, the Hitman reveals that the Priest himself is his final assignment, as he molested the killer as a boy. The Hitman gives the Priest the gun and offers him a chance to redeem himself . But when the Priest refuses, the Hitman carries out his assignment and kills him. Relieved to be done with his life of crime, the Hitman throws the gun away and walks away.

But the gun finds itself in the hands of an escaped lunatic named Louis who shoots and butchers his way out of an asylum. Paranoid, unstable, and armed with both the gun and an axe, the inmate carjacks a vehicle and makes good his escape. Louis soon finds himself lost and picks up an ominous Hitchhiker that night at a crossroads. The pair drive through the night unsure of the other’s motives. By the time they reach the Hitchhiker’s destination, the two have become fast friends. But the friendship is short-lived when the Hitchhiker discovers the truth about Louis, who promptly kills him with the gun and adds him to list of victims.

Later, during a chance encounter, Pookie and Papo steal the gun from Louis during a concert at Madison Square Garden. An MSG security guard named Ham, is next to feel the effects of the gun.

Ham, an arrogant and unpleasant loser, loses his job and is fiercely jealous of his twin brother Billy, his brother’s success, and especially his wife. When the brother’s get in to a heated fight in Billy’s SUV, they crash, resulting in Billy’s death. But because they are twins, the hospital and their family confuses the brothers and Ham covertly assumes Billy’s identity. Ham goes on to take over Billy’s life but soon learns the pasture isn’t always greener on the other side. Ham inherits all of Billy’s problems, which include a pregnant mistress, embezzlement, and a large debt to a local loan shark. When the truth is finally revealed, no one believes Ham, most especially not the loan shark who sends Pookie and Papo to kill him with the gun.

A shoot-out ensues with everyone being killed. A Police Officer on the scene is revealed to be our Mystery Man from the beginning of our story, who promptly pockets the gun to sell on the streets, beginning the cycle again…
