When a skydiving tragedy kills his wife (Macie) and lands him in a coma for two years, hard-nosed, super-successful Roger Ellis wakes with no memory of her or the catastrophic event. After his release from the hospital, he is a changed man, softer, more forgiving, but intent on discovering what went wrong.

Driven by subtle clues that seem to appear out of nowhere, Roger believes his dead wife is trying to lead him toward the truth. When a chance discovery of a photograph motivates him to embark on a trip to Italy, he brings along his sultry personal assistant (Sara) and his former best friend (Cal). But their adventure takes an unexpected turn when Cal ends up dead and Sara becomes a prime suspect. Italian police are convinced she's involved, but Roger has since fallen for his beautiful assistant and slips her out of the country under the noses of two dedicated detectives.

Once back in the states, Roger and Sara wed, but within days, authorities apprehend her and she faces possible extradition. As Roger works on her release, the real killers confront him and demand final payment for the contract killing. Roger soon discovers his ex-wife (Macie) purchased the contract on Cal’s life before her own death, with instructions to kill him the next time he traveled to Italy. When the hit men inform Roger that his ex-wife ordered the contract to protect him, he investigates further and uncovers a plot devised by his friend and the mayor of Chicago to build condominiums on land donated to the city by Roger’s grandfather. Roger then attends the dedication ceremony and exposes the corruption.

Near the conclusion of the film, we find Roger and Sara enjoying themselves on a cliff overlooking the ocean, their troubled pasts seemingly far behind them. But when Roger’s memory suddenly triggers, he realizes Sara participated in the skydiving plot that nearly killed him. He confronts her and is shocked to learn that his ex-wife was behind it all and in love with Sara, not him. The motivations behind the accident and killings now make sense, but Sara’s guilty admission pushes her to the brink and she tries to commit suicide by throwing herself from the cliff. In a heroic and emotional act of forgiveness, Roger saves her.

At the end of the film, we find Roger, Sara, and Annette Farino (originally a suspect in the murder investigation in Italy) sitting together at the same table shown in Roger’s earlier discovered photograph. We reveal the significance of the date shown on the back of the photo; it is Annette’s birthday, she is the child of Roger and his ex-wife, the daughter he never knew, and may have never found if not for following the mysterious clues that launched his perilous journey.

The final images in the film show the crooked condominium project abandoned and the park Roger’s grandfather donated to the city under reconstruction.
