Synopsis: Imagine you're 23 years old. Physically fit and in perfect health. You recently graduated college with a promising new career at a CPA firm and just won the bench press competition at a local gym. Life is good.

Now imagine getting hit by a speeding, stolen car, waking up from a coma 3 weeks later in a hospital bed and realizing that you're connected to three life support machines, unable to eat or speak and the entire left side of your body is paralyzed. Imagine seven months stuck in three hospitals and unable to go home. Five months without the ability to walk. Four months without the capacity to speak or shower. Three months without being able to eat real food.

This is what happened to Joseph Parenti when he was driving his vehicle on December 5, 1988. His life was turned upside down in a few short tumultuous moments. Mr. Parenti suffered a traumatic brain injury and his heart stopped three times during the ambulance ride to the hospital.

The prognosis for his recovery was not good. The doctor told his family, “His body and head has suffered massive trauma. I’m sorry to say this but, he’ll be lucky to survive the next 48 hours.”

He did survive the next 48 hours and struggled to survive the next seven months through a world of maddening medical incompetence, such as -
1-Neglect in the first hospital causing infected bed sores, advanced pneumonia, being over medicated and suffering weight loss of over 50 lbs.
2-Never being properly diagnosed with an inability to swallow which led to aspirating or inhaling food directly into his lungs.
3-ENT doctors telling him he'll never talk again
4-Callous doctors and heartless nurses
5-Multiple severe complicated operations

Through all the madness he kept up his great attitude and his will to survive. He was ultimately able to overcome these overwhelming obstacles and return home to his loving family.

Mr. Parenti's inspirational journey is a testament to the triumph of the human spirit.

This is a story of which proves the power of determination and perseverance. It's a story of faith, family, love and survival.
